The passage covers more than 5,000 nautical miles and is a major international yacht delivery. It involves long offshore sections, significant changes in weather and sea conditions, and long periods where the yacht is operating well away from normal marina and shore support.
The route from Phuket takes the yacht across the Indian Ocean towards the Red Sea before continuing north through the Suez Canal and into the Mediterranean. Weather routing and passage timing are particularly important on a delivery of this distance, with conditions needing to be assessed throughout the voyage rather than relying on the forecast available when leaving Thailand.
The Seawind 1370 is a capable offshore cruising catamaran with the performance to cover substantial distances under sail. Over a long passage, the rig, sails, steering and autopilot require regular attention. Engine operation, fuel, battery charging, navigation equipment, water supplies and other onboard systems are also monitored throughout the delivery.
A delivery of this length also requires careful preparation before leaving Phuket. Safety equipment, communications, navigation systems, spares, provisions, fuel and water reserves all need to be considered before the yacht heads offshore. Once underway, the vessel is managed according to the conditions, with sail selection and reefing adjusted to avoid unnecessary loads while maintaining efficient progress.
