This Leopard 44 was delivered from Langkawi to Kudat, taking the vessel up through Malaysian waters and around the coast of Borneo to Sabah. The Langkawi to Kudat route is approximately 1,000 nautical miles, depending on the track taken. It is a substantial coastal and offshore delivery, with the passage moving from the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia through the Malacca Strait and South China Sea before reaching northern Borneo.
The route passes through some of Southeast Asia’s most popular cruising areas and is a common relocation passage for yachts moving between Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia. Weather, local traffic and fuel planning all play a part in the voyage. The passage involves a mixture of open-water sailing, coastal navigation and areas of heavy commercial traffic. Weather conditions can change significantly along the route, while fuel planning becomes increasingly important as the distance between suitable facilities increases further east. Around Borneo, local weather, currents and sea conditions also need to be considered when deciding the final routing into Sabah.
