Lagoon 42

Lombok to Phuket

Delivery Overview

  • Vessel: Lagoon 42
  • Route: Lombok, Indonesia to Phuket, Thailand
  • Distance: Approximately 1,600 nautical miles
  • Duration: 15 days
  • Vessel Type: Sailing Catamaran

This yacht delivery involved relocating a Lagoon 42 catamaran from Lombok, Indonesia, to Phuket, Thailand, covering approximately 1,600 nautical miles through some of Southeast Asia’s busiest and most demanding cruising waters.

The passage followed a route north through the Java Sea before entering the busy shipping lanes of the Malacca Strait and continuing up the west coast of the Malay Peninsula to Phuket. Depending on weather conditions and routing, this delivery typically takes around two weeks.

Before departure, one of the main logistical challenges was organising a crew change. Rather than completing the change alongside the yacht, we travelled to an agent in Bali to finalise the required arrangements before rejoining the vessel and preparing for departure. Efficient logistics are often just as important as the passage itself, particularly when operating internationally.

Challenges Encountered

After leaving Lombok, the Java Sea presented its usual challenges. Large numbers of fishing vessels operate throughout the region, many with poor lighting and unpredictable manoeuvres. In addition, Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) are common throughout Indonesian waters and require continuous vigilance, particularly at night. These floating structures are often poorly marked and can present a serious collision risk if crews become complacent.

The Delivery

The passage then continued towards the Singapore Strait before clearing out of Indonesia at Nongsa, a common departure point for vessels heading into Malaysian and Thai waters.

From there, the route entered the Malacca Strait, one of the busiest commercial shipping lanes in the world. Maintaining a proper watch is essential, with constant traffic ranging from large container ships and tankers to coastal trading vessels, fishing boats and tug-and-barge combinations. Careful passage planning and AIS monitoring are critical throughout this section of the voyage.

After clearing the northern end of the Malacca Strait, the delivery continued through the Andaman Sea before arriving safely in Phuket.

The Lagoon 42 proved to be a comfortable and capable offshore cruising catamaran, well suited to this type of delivery. As with most passages through Indonesia and Malaysia, success depended less on sailing performance and more on good planning, effective watchkeeping and careful navigation through areas of heavy commercial traffic and extensive fishing activity.

This delivery is representative of many yacht relocations we undertake throughout Southeast Asia, where changing weather, international clearances and busy waterways require experienced passage planning and conservative decision-making.
